MORE ABOUT B811 YTC......

The Ministry of Defence had a long tradition of purchasing Leyland coach and bus chassis for a variety of uses.  An enthusiastic user of Leyland Leopards, they switched to the Tiger when Leopard production ceased in the early 1980s.

B811 YTC was part of the 1984 order for 52 left hand drive Leyland Tigers which were delivered in 1985.  Bodied by both Wadham Stringer and Plaxton, the vehicles were based in Germany where their use seems to have been extremely limited.  These Tigers were intended for the movement of staff, although the specification included large rear doors which would enable the vehicles to act as emergency ambulances and carry up to 16 stretchers each.

Changes in defence policy resulted in the Ministry of Defence disposing of these vehicles in the late 1990's and B811 YTC was one of many which returned to the UK for conversion to passenger transport specification.   Converted to right hand drive, the vehicle was subsequently re-seated in an unusual 3+2 configuration giving a high seating capacity of 68.

Following conversion, these Leyland Tigers sold extremely quickly to a number of bus and coach operators throughout the country.   Not only were they low mileage vehicles, but they offered a serious alternative to double-deckers for home to school transport.  Many of the vehicles, including B811 YTC, featured refinements such as 3-point seat belts, air conditioning and diesel powered heating.

The late PANDH Travel of Birkenhead purchased two Wadham Stringer examples which passed to Woottens when the business closed in 2000.  When in use with Woottens, B811 YTC had an experimental American style School Bus livery for use on school transport work.

When Leyland ceased to produce buses and coaches, Dennis become a popular choice for the Ministry of Defence.  A large number of Plaxton Prima bodied Dennis Javelins joined the Ministry of Defence during 2002.
