MORE ABOUT THE OLYMPIAN AND E227 CFC...... Designed and originally built by Bristol Commercial Vehicles, the Olympian was produced as a replacement for the ageing Atlantean, Fleetline and VR range of double-deck chassis. The Olympian was to become the final bus chassis to be produced by Bristol Commercial Vehicles. When the Bristol factory closed in 1983 Olympian production switched to Leyland's Workington plant in Cumbria. With the exception of a short period in build at the Farington plant, production remained in Cumbria until 1993. In 1988 Leyland Bus was purchased by the Swedish giant Volvo and by 1993 Olympian production had moved to the Volvo factory in Irvine, Scotland. It was here that the chassis was treated to extensive modernisation and subsequently became known as the Volvo Olympian. E227 CFC was one of five Leyland Olympians (E225-9 CFC) purchased new by Oxford Bus Company in 1988 for use on the busy Park & Ride services. This batch of vehicles were amongst the last Olympians built with Leyland Hydracyclic gearboxes, which had been replaced by the ZF Ecomat unit. These Olympians were later converted to single door layout and transferred to High Wycombe when new Dennis Tridents arrived in Oxford during 1999. All five vehicles were to pass into Arriva ownership when the High Wycombe operation was sold in December 2000. E227 CFC joined Woottens in August 2003 for use on local school services and has since been refurbished and fitted with seatbelts. A number of other Leyland Olympians from this batch can still be found in service with Arriva, sometimes working into Oxford on the 280 service.
