MORE ABOUT THE LEYLAND TIGER & THE DUPLE LASER BODY...... The Tiger succeeded the popular Leyland Leopard with air suspension as standard and more powerful engine options. The Tiger was an excellent attempt by Leyland Bus to match the strong competition from Volvo and other foreign manufacturers who had developed popular models, often coupled with attractive continental bodywork. Of particular concern to Leyland was the success of Volvo's B58 coach chassis, which was gaining an excellent reputation for reliability and attracted high values on the second hand market. Coach builders like Plaxton and Duple were also developing new styles of bodywork to maintain their market share against the new European competition. Duple launched the Laser and high floor Caribbean range in 1982. The dramatic styling of the Laser was not to everybody's taste, with the frontal profile drastically differing from the more traditional lines. When Hestair took control of Duple in June 1983 poor sales in the coach market resulted in a swift re-work to improve the coach range. A quick facelift resulted in the Laser 2 being displayed at the 1984 Coach Show with neater front grill and altogether tidier detailing. Bonded glazing became standard as did a one piece windscreen. The end result was a much smoother look which has dated rather well. The Leyland Tiger was more successful and remained in production until the early 1990's. When Leyland ceased manufacturing their own engines the Cummins L10 unit became standard, however some of the last Tigers produced were fitted with Volvo engines. By this stage Leyland Bus was owned by Volvo and the Tiger was not replaced with a new model. UIB 4752 was one of the last Duple Laser coaches produced and has been with Woottens since early 1999. This coach benefited from an extensive overhaul before entering service with Woottens, including complete replacement of all interior soft trim. A fully reconditioned engine was also fitted and the body was extensively stripped down and re-panelled before being re-sprayed. UIB 4752 must be one of the finest examples of its type in service today. |
